Child hit by vehicle in DC near school, police say

A child was struck by a vehicle near a school in the District, according to officials.

DC police said the child was hit in the 2400 block of Alabama Avenue, SE at about 3:15 p.m.

The location is along the same block as Garfield Preparatory Academy, which dismisses at 3:15 p.m., according to the school's website. A District of Columbia Public Schools spokesperson confirmed the child was not a DCPS student, but confirmed the collision happened near Garfield Preparatory Academy.

The child was rushed to the hospital and was conscious and breathing, according to authorities. Officials did not disclose any other details about the condition of the child.

All lanes of traffic in the 2400 block of Alabama Avenue, SE from Irving Street to 24th Street, SE were closed.
