Car crashes into apartments in Landover, then flees

Police are searching for a driver who crashed into an apartment building in Landover before driving away from the scene.

Prince George's County police say it happened just before 2 p.m. Monday at the Kings Square Apartments in the 3400 block of Dodge Park Road. The building was evacuated for hours, and the crash caused two apartments to be condemned, displacing the families living in the units.

Police released surveillance video of a silver sedan believed to be a Nissan slamming into the building. The car then backed away slowly before police say it eventually drove away.

Police say they do not know if this was an accident or intentional.

The families that live in the apartments -- one on the ground floor along with the unit above it -- had to clear out their belongings and were relocated to other apartments.

A man who lives in the apartment that was hit said he spoke to the driver, who told him that his brakes failed. The resident went back in his apartment to get a jacket, and when he came back outside, the driver was left the scene.

Gbenisola Agbanigo said her family is grateful no one was hurt, but the driver needs to take responsibility.

"He could have stayed," Agbanigo said. "It really impacted us. We have to move. It's been really hard. I just really wish he could have made a better decision."

Police say there were no reported injuries and the incident remains under investigation.
