Capital Beltway, Interstate 270 toll lane expansion proposal under criticism from some local leaders

Proposals to expand the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270 are facing criticism from local lawmakers who say safeguards for residents and the environment need to be put into place.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan proposed the $11 billion idea in 2017 that would add hundreds of miles of additional toll lanes to those roadways.

Leaders from Montgomery, Prince George's and Frederick counties are calling on the Senate in Maryland to pass legislation that would "provide common-sense safeguards for taxpayers, the environment and the financial health of Maryland by establishing critical oversight for statewide public-private transportation partnerships."
