Cab driver arrested after police say he sexually assaulted woman during trip in Northwest DC
WASHINGTON - A cab driver accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger over the Memorial Day weekend has been arrested.
The alleged incident happened early Sunday morning when a woman told authorities that she got into a cab along U Street in Northwest, D.C.
The woman admits she had been drinking and told police she "blacked out." She says when she woke, the cab driver was sexually assaulting her.
The woman said she fought him off, opened a window, and began screaming for help. A witness in another vehicle heard her in the area 16th Street and forced the cab to stop.
Officers responded and arrested the driver, who was identified as 24-year-old Yared Mekonnen. He faces sex abuse and kidnapping charges and is due in court today.
