Bitter cold temperatures bring Thanksgiving chill to DC region

It's all about the cold this Thanksgiving! FOX 5's Tucker Barnes says we are in for the coldest temperatures we've seen so far this fall -- so bundle up and keep warm if you plan to be outside for any period of time.

Temperatures across the region this afternoon will be 20 to 25 degrees below the average, Tucker said. Daytime highs will top out in the mid-30s. An arctic high is responsible for bringing the bitter cold air our way and will keep it in our region through Friday.

Look for evening rain on Saturday with mostly clear skies on Sunday.

Exposure to extremely cold temperature leaves you susceptible to frostbite in a matter of minutes. According to the National Weather Service, the hands, feet and other uncovered parts of the body are most prone to frostbite. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce.

NWS says adjusting your schedule to avoid being outdoors during the coldest part of the day, typically the early morning, is one way to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.

Also, remember to bring in your pets and to fill up your gas tank in case you become stranded. Get more cold weather tips online.
