Alligators in Maryland? Police say signs part of prank

Signs warning park-goers to avoid disturbing alligators have popped up at parks in Maryland, but don't worry – they're just part of a prank, according to police.

"There are no alligators in this area. Any claims about a managed alligator hunt or alligator-related warnings are purely fictitious," said Maryland National Capital Park Police in a statement Wednesday.

The signs were spotted along Sligo Creek Trail in Takoma Park, saying "do not disturb the alligators" and "stay away from the water."

On the bottom of the sign is a QR code and a credit to the "Maryland Department of Herpetological Resources."

What's next:

Police say they have identified an adult male suspect, and charges are pending.

Anyone with information on these signs is urged to reach out to officials at 301-929-2748.
