Alan Gross celebrates 1 year since release from Cuban prison; says he would go back to Cuba

WASHINGTON - One year ago this week, Alan Gross was heading back to the United States after spending five harrowing years in a Cuban prison.

He was accused of espionage while working in Cuba as a subcontractor for the U.S. Agency on international development.

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen worked for his release and was on the plane that brought Alan Gross back home.

Both joined us to talk about the special anniversary.

"I feel great. I'm putting on too much weight. I chew my food a lot easier now," Gross told FOX 5's Steve Chenevey. He said that the night he was arrested his life became surreal and remained that way until his release.

Gross said that he never questioned if he was doing the right thing - he just never felt he was doing the wrong thing by working to provide internet access to the island's small Jewish community.

"20/20 hindsight is pretty accurate. For me, it was a lot more accurate. Had I known the actual situation I would have never done what I did," he said.

Gross says he is feeling healthier than ever and is excited that he is about to be a grandfather.

Would he go back?

"In a heartbeat," he said "just as long as they promise not to re-arrest me."
