4-year-old boy, man shot in Northeast DC

WASHINGTON - Police said a man and a 4-year-old boy were shot Monday evening in Northeast D.C.

The shooting took place at the intersection of 18th Street and M Street at around 6:12 p.m. The adult male victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound when officers arrived at the scene. He was transported to the hospital, according to D.C. Police Assistant Chief Robert Contee.

Police also learned that the boy was also wounded in the shooting and was taken to a local hospital by a Good Samaritan in the area.

Both victims were conscious and breathing and their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, the assistant chief said.

Police later took a suspect occupying a burgundy SUV into custody in the area of Bladensburg Road and Mt. Olivet Road, nearby the shooting scene. Contee said there was at least one weapon recovered.

Residents told FOX 5 they heard up to 10 gunshots. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Kathy Henderson said she was outside when the shooting took place.

"I was talking with four of my neighbors and we were standing in the middle of the sidewalk, and we hear this barrage of gunfire, which is very disturbing, very unsettling, and it's frightening," she said. "This is a beautiful day and we should be walking and talking, getting to know one another and not having to duck from gunfire. And certainly one of our children and another adult should not be hit."

Assistant Chief Contee said there may be other suspects involved in the shooting and police are asking for the public's help for any information in this case.
