4 children ‘significantly' injured in St. Mary's County crash involving a horse and buggy

Six people - including four children - suffered injuries that the St. Mary's County sheriff's office described as "significant" when a sedan crashed into their horse-drawn buggy on Tuesday night in Mechanicsville.

The Sheriff's Office responded to the scene in the 28100 block of Thompson Corner Road in Mechanicsville, Md.

They say the sedan was traveling south on the roadway when it struck the buggy as it crossed from Millburn Lane.

Fannie Hertzler, 21, of Mechanicsville was operating the horse-drawn buggy.

The passengers included:
- Anna Hertzler, 19
- Allen Hertzler, 13
- Rhoda Hertzler, 10
- Lavina Hertzler, 9
- Bena Hertzler, 7

The driver of the sedan was injured, but his injuries were not as significant as those of the children and young adults in the buggy.

Investigators say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
