2 children dead in Loveville house fire, St. Mary's County officials say

Two children were killed and four of their family members were injured in an early morning blaze in St. Mary's County on Tuesday, according to officials.

Fire officials said the fire broke out at the home on Point Lookout Road in Loveville, Maryland, just north of Leonardtown, Maryland, at about 4:30 a.m.

Family identified the two deceased children to FOX 5 as 3-year-old Kaleb and 2-year-old Kassidy Johnson.

The mother of the Kaleb and Kassidy lived in the home with her sister who also had two children, also under the age of 6, according to the family.

The children were flown to Children's National Medical Center and the adults were taken to Washington Hospital Center.

Friends told FOX 5 the mother of Kaleb and Kassidy was listed in serious condition and will remain in the hospital for at least a week. Deputies said a neighbor spotted the massive blaze and sprinted over to try to help.

"He saw the fire and actually ran over and to my knowledge was actually pulling children and adult survivors out of the windows of the home," Julie Yingling with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Department said.

Aerial images from the scene showed the large-scale destruction caused by the fire and children's toys could be seen in the yard surrounding what was left of the home.

Officials said the home did not have working smoke alarms. A new law that went into effect on New Year's Day requires Maryland residents with smoke detectors that run off of 9-volt batteries to install new ones that have a 10-year lifespan.

A GoFundMe page established for the Johnson family has raised $3,000 as of Tuesday evening.
