19 year-old DC woman shot and killed in front of home Saturday night in Southeast
WASHINGTON - Police are still investigating after a 19-year-old woman was shot and killed in front of her Southeast D.C. home Saturday night.
FOX 5's Lindsay Watts reports that Unique Davis celebrated her birthday the day before she was killed. The shooting happened on Tubman Road near Alabama Avenue, several blocks from the Congress Heights Metro station.
Neighbors say they heard about eight gunshots just before 7 p.m. and came outside to see Davis' body on her front porch. Davis' sister was grazed by a bullet, according to family and a man was also shot, but survived.
Neither police nor family have said what led up the crime or if any suspects have been identified. Family is left wondering how they could have stopped this.
"I was just on the phone with her. If I had went and got her, she wouldn't be gone, she would've been with me," said Davena Davis, Unique's aunt. "But I missed that phone call."
She said her niece, an Anacostia High School graduate, had just started a new job at FedEx and was excited for the future. Davis urged whoever killed her niece to come forward.
"Turn yourself in. Do the right thing because if that was your family, how would you feel? You would want the same," she said.
On Sunday evening, dozens of people gathered to remember Unique, lighting candles and releasing balloons.
"I want people to know that she was beautiful," said neighbor, Alayshia Hill. "And it's just crazy that she lived at the same neighborhood as me, she's the same age as me. And just crazy this happened."
