Wrong way driver killed after crash on I-95 in Stafford County

Police say the driver of a van is dead after crashing head first into a tractor trailer while driving the wrong direction on Interstate 95.

Investigators say the crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. on southbound I-95 just north of the Centreport Parkway exit in Stafford County.

Officers say the driver of the van entered the highway going northbound in the southbound lanes and struck the tractor trailer head on.

Both drivers were transported to Mary Washington Hospital where the driver of the van later died.

The crash closed the southbound lanes of I-95 for approximately 5 hours. The cause is still under investigation.
