Woman dies in Alexandria fire

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A woman is dead after a fire in her Virginia apartment building.

Alexandria firefighters say they found the woman dead in the bedroom of her garden apartment around 5:30 Sunday morning.

They found a fire in the bedroom in the building in the 6000 block of Edsall Road and extinguished it.

Firefighters say "improperly discarded smoking materials" caused the fire.

Officials have yet to determine the cause of the woman's death.

No one was displaced in the fire, which caused an estimated $225,000 in damage.
