Fairfax County police say a mother and her two children were struck while walking at an intersection in Herndon Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, a 20-year-old woman driving a 2008 Toyota Highlander on McNair Farms Drive was attempting to make a right turn onto Centreville Road at around 3:22 p.m. when she struck the victims crossing the road at the intersection.

The 52-year-old woman had to be rescued by firefighters after being trapped underneath the vehicle as a result of the collision.

She was transported to the hospital in critical condition. However, police say her condition was later upgraded and she was being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The mother's 11-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son were also taken to the hospital with injuries that are also considered non-life-threatening.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene.

Northbound Centreville Road was closed for a couple of hours as a crash reconstruction team investigated the accident, but was later reopened to traffic.

Police say it does not appear speed or alcohol contributed to the collision. No charges have been made at this time.
