Washington Monument closed due to broken elevator

The Washington Monument is closed after the elevator stopped working Tuesday afternoon.

The National Park Service said 18 visitors and a park ranger were inside the elevator when it became stuck at around 280 feet of the 555-foot structure.

Everyone in the elevator along with 22 other visitors and another park ranger on the observation level were safely evacuated from the monument. No one was injured.

This is the latest of issues with the monument's elevator. The landmark on the National Mall was closed several days last month for repairs to an elevator control box. This is the fifth time the elevator has broken down since the monument reopened in 2014 following damage caused by an earthquake.

The Washington Monument will remain closed until inspections and possible repairs are completed.
