Two Northwestern High School students were injured after being beaten by a group of people in Hyattsville Friday afternoon.

Hyattsville police said an officer on patrol found one of the victims lying on the sidewalk at around 3:34 p.m. in the 6700 block of Belcrest Road nearby the school. Police would locate another victim and their investigation found that they were assaulted by a group of 10 to 15 male teenagers.

The teenagers were attacked with a piece of wood and a knife. One of the victims suffered major trauma to the back of his head and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The other victim suffered minor injuries and did not have to be treated at the hospital.

The suspects were last seen running towards Toledo Road in the direction of The Mall at Prince Georges.

Police said investigators are interviewing witnesses and evidence markers were seen laid out in the area.

Earlier in the day, a group of kids from the high school was out in front of the school protesting the outcome of the presidential election. But police said they have no reason to believe the events are related.

Some classmates told FOX 5 they are hearing it may have been gang-related. Police would not confirm that, but also said they are not ruling out anything.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 301-985-5082.
