Suspect steals car from dealership while sales rep shows him vehicle

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. - A car dealership in Capitol Heights said a man walked in saying he was in the market for a vehicle. However, after looking at the pricey car, he took off in it without paying for it.

It all happened Monday at the Robinson Poyner Automotive at around 1 p.m. The dealership told FOX 5 the suspect walked in and wanted to look at a 2007 BMW 5-series vehicle. Because he was not looking to get behind the wheel for a test drive, a salesperson opened up the car for a quick inspection.

"He basically asked to look at it and then once the vehicle was started, he pushed the sales rep out of the way and jumped in the car and drove off without a tag," said one of the employees at the dealership.

Surveillance video at the dealership captured the suspect walking around the lot. He is described as a light-skinned black male in his late 30s or early 40s and is balding in the back of his head.

In the meantime, the dealership said they have no choice but to change its procedures and will ask for identification and fingerprint anyone who wants to look at a car on their lot. They told us it's a terrible way to business, but it's a necessity.
