Banneker High School principal Anita Berger was named DC's Principal of the Year on Tuesday, and the look on her face when she found out was priceless. Berger learned of the honor in a surprise announcement by new DC Public Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson.

Principal Berger is Banneker High's longtime leader. The school has had a 100 percent graduation rate for the last four years, and demonstrated strong gains on the end-of-year assessments. Berger has also been in charge during progress on passage rates of AP exams.

Berger started her career at Banneker in the 90s as a physical education teacher and worked her way up to become principal.

The prestigious honor is awarded annually to a DCPS principal. The award will be celebrated at the annual Standing Ovation event at the Kennedy Center, which honors highly effective teachers, principals, and staff. Congratulations, Principal Berger!
