Smoke detectors help woman, bedridden mother escape fire in Southeast DC

Smoke detectors helped a woman and her bedridden mother escape a fire in Southeast, D.C. early Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported around 3:30 a.m. on the 3500 block of N Street. Officials say the woman was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and was able to drag her mother to the front door where firefighters helped her to safety.

Authorities are still searching for the family’s missing dog. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
