SafeTrack Metro plan will not be finalized Monday

Metro's massive effort to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the system will not be finalized Monday.

The "SafeTrack" maintenance repair program, which is expected to eliminate maintenance backlogs and restore infrastructure to good health, will accelerate three years of work into one year.

Metro said last week that it was possible the plan would be ready by the beginning of this week, however on Monday, FOX 5 learned it would take the transit agency longer to finalize.

The plan will include weeknight track work beginning at 8 pm. Beginning June 3, Metro will close at midnight - seven days a week. In addition, there will be no extended hours early openings or late closings.

Two issues caused delays along Metro lines over the weekend. Debris on the tracks at L'Enfant Plaza around 11 a.m. on Sunday caused the first delay. No injuries were reported and the fire was quickly put out by crews on the scene.

A second incident at the Bethesda station was caused by a suspected arcing insulator. Trains single tracked while the incident was addressed. No injuries were reported.
