Repairs, infrastructure improvements to shut down Metro's Yellow Line service for 2 weeks

Thanksgiving traffic may be behind us after a crazy week on the roads, but that doesn't mean the nightmare is over - not by a longshot.

Starting on Monday, Metro's Yellow Line will shut down for two full weeks (from Monday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Dec. 9), much to the surprise of some of its riders.

"Umm, no. I didn't know that," said Stephen Notes at the Columbia Heights Metro station Thursday night.

The transit agency will be working on the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River during the shutdown. The project includes both structural repairs and rail infrastructure improvements such as grout pad reconstruction and fastener replacement along the entire bridge.

"I really wish that they could do it when it's a little warmer outside because it wouldn't be such a burden on the commuters to wait in the warmth," said another Metro rider, Kinza Faiz.

Metro said customers should use the Blue Line for service between Virginia and D.C. instead. But fair warning - the work is scheduled to cut rush hour rail service at some Blue and Yellow Line stations in half.
