WASHINGTON - Thanksgiving traffic may be behind us after a crazy week on the roads, but that doesn't mean the nightmare is over - not by a longshot.
Starting on Monday, Metro's Yellow Line will shut down for two full weeks (from Monday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Dec. 9), much to the surprise of some of its riders.
"Umm, no. I didn't know that," said Stephen Notes at the Columbia Heights Metro station Thursday night.
The transit agency will be working on the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River during the shutdown. The project includes both structural repairs and rail infrastructure improvements such as grout pad reconstruction and fastener replacement along the entire bridge.
"I really wish that they could do it when it's a little warmer outside because it wouldn't be such a burden on the commuters to wait in the warmth," said another Metro rider, Kinza Faiz.
Metro said customers should use the Blue Line for service between Virginia and D.C. instead. But fair warning - the work is scheduled to cut rush hour rail service at some Blue and Yellow Line stations in half.
Blue/Yellow line service adjustments from Nov. 26-Dec. 9 due to Potomac Bridge improvement project:
Be advised, during the Dec. 1-2 weekend, shuttle buses will replace Green Line trains between Mt Vernon Sq and Navy Yard-Ballpark. Archives, Waterfront and the platforms at Gallery Place and L'Enfant Plaza will be closed.
* During the 14-day project, all customers parking at Huntington or Franconia-Springfield will be charged the regular daily parking rate and the non-rider fee waived to accommodate customers utilizing alternative bus or other transit services.
To find the Metrobus option best for you go to Metro's trip planner and enter the bus only option from your originating station or transfer station to your destination or see the service nearby.
