Prince George's County Schools meet to discuss shortening spring break
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Prince George's County Schools will meet to decide if spring break will be cut even shorter for students.
Originally scheduled from April 3 to April 6, spring break was trimmed down by two days to make up for time missed due to weather related closings.
On Thursday, the school board will vote on whether students will return to class on April 5 or if they will return a day earlier - on April 4. School is already closed on March 30 and April 2 for the Easter holiday.
Prince George's County budgeted five days for weather related closings. So far this year they have used six days.
A bill that passed the Maryland House of Delegates on Wednesday would allow schools to extend the school year by a total of five days without having to receive a waiver from the State Board of Education.
Maryland Governor Hogan had previously issued an Executive order to open schools after Labor Day and closing them by June 15. He expected to sign the newly passed bill.
It is unclear if the new legislation will allow Prince George's County Schools to keep their original spring break intact.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
