Prince George's County Public Schools extending school year by 3 days

The Prince George's County school board has voted to extend the school year by three days for students to make up the instructional days that were lost due to weather-related closures.

The last day of the school year for Prince George's County Public Schools will now take place on Wednesday, June 20. Students will have two-hour early dismissal on June 19 and June 20, school officials say.

School districts in Maryland are mandated by the state to end the school year by June 15. However, Maryland lawmakers passed emergency legislation last month that will allow school districts to add up to five days to the end of the academic year after June 15 to make up for days lost due to inclement weather.

The emergency legislation also allowed Prince George's County Public Schools to restore its spring break at the beginning of April after school officials initially announced that they were going to shorten it to one day to make up for the snow days.
