There is a new leader of the Prince George's County Public School system. During an announcement on Tuesday, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks named Dr. Monica Goldson the new Chief Executive Officer.

"I am so happy to announce, without reservation, my appointment Dr. Monica Goldson as the permanent chief executive officer for Prince George's County Schools," said Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks' office says the decision comes after a nationwide search. Under state law, a firm was hired by the county to conduct that search, the firm identified multiple candidates who were interviewed by a three-person committee established by Governor Larry Hogan, and then the committee sent three finalists to Alsobrooks.

"Today is historic for me and it's historic for Prince George's County. Because I am the first native Prince Georgian woman to lead this district in over 100 years," said Goldson.

Goldson has been at the helm for nearly a year as the interim CEO after former CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell quit the position with three years left on his contract.

Goldson was named Interim CEO of Schools almost a year after Maxwell decided to leave the job-- walking away with about $800,000 in severance. That followed multiple scandals, including a FOX 5 investigation that revealed grade inflation and students graduating without meeting requirements.

Goldson was a deputy superintendent under Maxwell who has worked for the school district for her entire career.
