Police: Man dead after shooting in Prince George's County

A man has died after being shot early Tuesday morning in Prince George's County, according to police.

Investigators say it happened around 2 a.m. in the 6200 block of Sligo Parkway in Hyattsville.

Police say responding officers found the man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

"At this early phase, we do believe that a resident inside of this home shot a man outside of the home and he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead," said Prince George's County Police Cpl. Tyler Hunter. "So we are working to establish exactly what circumstances occurred leading up to that shooting."

Police say they received a 911 call from a person who told them that there was someone trying to steal a truck parked in the driveway. The 911 call taker could hear shots being fired in the background.

Police are investigating whether shots were fired from a second-floor window of the house. The top-half of the window was seen shattered and there is an apparent bullet hole on the bottom pane of the window.

There are at least eight security cameras installed at the home.

Detectives were on the scene Tuesday speaking to witnesses and collecting evidence.

"There was several witnesses inside of the home, which we are speaking to and trying to put all the pieces together," said Cpl. Hunter.

FOX 5's Paul Wagner reports that the total number of witnesses may have been as many as 11 people and they were all taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Police towed two vehicles from the crime scene - a Mercedes SUV and a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The initial calls to police said the Mercedes may have been occupied by at least two people who may have pulled into the driveway of the home before attempting to take the truck.

The homeowner was not taken into custody and no charges have been filed in this case so far.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
