Police: 800-plus vehicles stranded Saturday on Virginia roads

While the snow was winding down across the D.C. region on Saturday night, authorities in Virginia asked residents to continue to stay off of the roads until crews can clear the snow for traffic.

Virginia State Police say they received reports of 292 crashes and 804 disabled vehicles statewide on Saturday (through 6 pm) alone-- and 260 of those disabled vehicles were stranded in northern Virginia alone.

With temperatures dropping and winds still blowing Saturday night, police said drifting snow was still causing white-out conditions. For that reason, residents are asked to remain inside their homes and off the streets because of conditions that remain dangerous. Police also warn that roads will still be slick and treacherous on Sunday morning.

Through the duration of the storm thus far, police say they've fielded 5,763 calls for service, including 1,324 traffic crashes and 1,683 disabled vehicles.

For road conditions and closures, Virginians are still encouraged to call 511 or go to www.511virginia.org and not 911 or #77. Emergency phone lines need to remain open for emergencies only.
