Overturned tractor trailer crash causes delays, downs power lines in Fairfax County

An officer was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a tractor trailer accident in Centreville Thursday morning.

Police say the crash was reported around 4:45 a.m. and involved an overturned tractor trailer and several other vehicles. Traffic was closed on the southbound lanes of Route 28 near Interstate 66 for several hours while emergency responded to the scene. The roadway reopened to traffic around 7 a.m.

At around 8:30 a.m., an officer who was assisting with directing traffic was struck by a vehicle. Route 28 was closed again while a Medevac helicopter landed and flew the officer to a hospital. He injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The cause of the initial accident is still under investigation.
