Officer shoots armed man during chase, confrontation in Capitol Heights

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a Maryland police officer shot an armed man during a confrontation.

Prince George's County Police Chief Henry Stawinski said at a news conference Friday that officers tried to stop a vehicle driven by a man wanted for violent crimes Thursday night in Capitol Heights. He says the man sped away, then stopped, and finally ran away.

Police said in a news release that the man turned and pointed a gun at officers, and an officer shot him, striking him in the arm. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Officers say the man, 27-year-old Terrence Franklin, has been charged with assault and weapons charges.

The department identified the officer who shot Franklin as Officer First Class Brandon Farley. Franklin is black; Farley is white.
