NYPD detectives accused of raping teen in van

Two NYPD detectives are accused of leaving their post in Brooklyn, driving to another area of Brooklyn, falsely arresting an 18-year-old girl, and then raping her in their police van.

Brooklyn Acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the allegations "disheartening" and a "stunning betrayal" by the detectives. He announced a 50-count indictment against Det. Eddie Martins, 37, and Det. Richard Hall, 32, of Brooklyn South Narcotics.

Martins and Hall appeared in court Monday to hear the charges against them.

The DA said the two cops stopped the 18-year-old last month while she was driving. Two males were in the car with her. The indictment alleges the cops handcuffed the teenager for carrying prescription pills, put her in the police van, drove to Coney Island and raped her.

The DA said after the detectives dropped her off, the victim went to the hospital where a rape kit was administered to collect evidence. Gonzalez said DNA from the victim matches the two detectives.

In court, the detectives' attorneys said the sex was consensual.

But Gonzalez said, "the victim did not consent to what happened to her." He is looking into the possibility there could be more victims. He is asking members of the public to step forward with any information they may have.

The NYPD said both detectives have been suspended without pay. If convicted, each of the detectives faces up to 25 years in prison.
