More than 40,000 gallons of sewage spilled near Annapolis prompts emergency waterway closure

Health officials in Anne Arundel County have issued an emergency waterway closure for a section of Carr Creek in Annapolis after a major sewage spill.

Officials say an estimated 41,700 gallons of sewage spilled from three manholes near the pumping station at the Naval Academy Golf Course on Bryant Road. The spill began on July 2.

The closure impacts Carr Creek from its headwaters to Carr Creek Road until July 10. It applies to swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and other direct water contact.

Anyone coming in contact with the closed area are advised to immediately wash with soap and warm water, officials say. Clothing should also be washed.
