A Metro Transit police officer was stabbed by a fare evader Tuesday, according to officials.

Police say the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when MTPD officers working bus enforcement detail at Gallery Place stopped a suspect for not paying the Metro bus fare.

When officers attempted to detain him, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer in the wrist.

After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was detained not far from the scene a short time later with the assistance of D.C. police.

The suspect was placed under arrest and the weapon recovered.

The MTPD officer was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
