What we know:
Shreveport police spokesperson Chris Bordelon said in a news conference Sunday morning that eight children were killed overnight in a mass domestic shooting.
He said the children ranged in age from 1 to 14 years old.
Police were first called to a home just after 6 a.m. and found the shooting scene spanned two residences on that street, and said that a third home on another street was also part of the scene.
An additional two people were also shot, he said.
The suspect stole a car while leaving the scene of the shootings and was followed by police, according to Bordelon.
Police eventually fired at the suspect, killing him, Bordelon added.
What we don't know:
Police haven’t yet given the identity of the suspect or the children.
It’s also not known if all the children were related to the suspect, but Bordelon said at least some of the children inside the homes that died were his descendants.
Police also didn’t say who the other two victims were, or how seriously they were injured.
What they're saying:
"What we can tell you was this was a domestic disturbance here," Bordelon said, but didn’t give additional details. "This is a very large scene, multiple deceased children present, and so we’re going to ask for patience in getting information out."
In a statement, state police said no officers were harmed in the shooting that involved an officer after a police pursuit into Bossier City on Sunday morning.
Shreveport is also the district that Speaker Mike Johnson represents, and he posted on social media:
"Heartbreaking tragedy in Shreveport this morning – 8 children were senselessly killed and multiple others were injured. My team is in touch with local law enforcement as more details emerge. We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. And we are grateful to the Shreveport, Bossier, and Louisiana State Police for their swift response."
Big picture view:
The mass shooting was the deadliest in the U.S. in more than two years, according to The Associated Press.
