Jake Hamilton looks back on the best X-Files episodes ever

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - We are just days away from the highly anticipated season finale of "The X-Files."

Ratings for the return of the series have been big, so a lot of people are excited to see how it's all going to end. So, FOX 32's resident X-Files geek Jake Hamilton counted down the top 5 episodes of all time:

5. BAD BLOOD - SEASON 5

In this episode, Mulder drives a wooden stake through a teenager's heart because he thinks he's a vampire. But as it turns out, he might actually be human. It sounds dark and tragic, but this is easily the funniest episode of the X-Files and people often forget that the show, at it's best, can be incredibly funny. No episode best exemplified that than "Bad Blood."

4. JOSE CHUNG'S 'FROM OUTER SPACE' - SEASON 3

What makes this a great X-Files episode is how much it actually makes fun of the X-Files. It's one of those very satirical, meta episodes that shows the series is very aware of just how ridiculous it can actually be.

3. CLYDE BRUCKMAN'S 'FINAL REPOSE - SEASON 3

This episode features a man who can see the future and helps Mulder and Scully stop the murders of psychics and fortune tellers. Now this may sound like your run of the mill episode, but it is widely considered a staple in the series because it's when Scully truly decided that she was ready to accept Mulder's wild paranormal theories.

It's a tragic and heartbreaking episode that's considered not just one of the best of the X-Files, but one of the best episodes of television ever.

2. POST MODERN PROMETHEUS - SEASON 5

This is a beautiful, black and white spin on the classic Frankenstein story. In it, we realize that, sadly, not much has changed since the days that Shelly wrote Frankenstein. Our society still fights the things we don't understand.

A famous side story about this episode: The show desperately tried to get Cher to perform because a crucial plot point. She turned them down and then publicly admitted regretting her decision after seeing how beautiful the episode was.

1. HOME - SEASON 4

This is easily the scariest, most twisted, most demented episode of the series -- maybe of television ever.
Prepare yourself for this explanation: It features a group of inbred killers who have sex with their paraplegic mother who they keep locked away underneath a bed in their backwoods home.

The episode caused much outcry from audiences and had to be preceded by a special warning before it was aired and was the only episode of the series to earn a TV-MA rating.
