Here are the best states for opening a marijuana business in 2019

Who wants to be a marijuana millionaire?

In 2018, retail sales of medical and recreational cannabis hit nearly $10 billion.

According to marijuana business daily, that number is expected to double by 2022.

But if you're looking to profit off the pot industry, you might have to relocate. FitSmallBusiness.com revealed the best states to start a marijuana business in 2019. Rounding out the top five were California, Alaska, Michigan, and Colorado.

Coming in as the number one place for selling weed: Oregon. The pioneering state has the nation's lowest application fee for the business.

The list is also based on each state's legal environment, license availability and taxes.

Maryland ranked 12th on the list and Virginia was 35th. Washington, D.C. was not included.

In 2018, Uplift Maryland LLC was awarded $45,000 by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission to provide training to small, minority, and women business owners and entrepreneurs interested in becoming licensed in the medical cannabis industry. According to their website, courses will be offered free of charge beginning in January 2019, with both in-person and online training available in Prince George's County.
