The backstory:

Kodi disappeared on Sunday afternoon while Pelt’s boyfriend was coaching high school football near the 800 block of 26th Street Northeast.

Surveillance video later showed a woman stopping her car, picking up Kodi, and driving away.

The footage was shared with D.C. police and FOX 5 in an effort to spread the word.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding Kodi, a Goldendoodle support dog, who was stolen Sunday afternoon in Northeast D.C.

The coverage paid off when a stranger, who saw the news, texted Pelt from an unrecognized number. The tip led Pelt and her relatives to arrange a meeting at a safe location with the woman who had taken Kodi.

"I’ve learned my lesson," Pelt said. She plans to have Kodi microchipped and fitted with an AirTag collar this weekend to prevent future incidents.

D.C. police confirmed the case remains an active investigation.

Kodi is now back home, enjoying his toys, wearing his favorite outfits, and eating comfortably, much to the relief of his grateful owner.
