Funerals for Virginia State Police pilots killed in crash near Charlottesville

The funeral services for Virginia State Police Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates will be held Saturday and Sunday in Chesterfield, Virginia.

The Virginia State Police pilots died in a helicopter crash in Albemarle County on August 12 while assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville.

The service for Cullen will be at the Southside Church of the Nazarene in Chesterfield, Virginia on Saturday and the service for Bates at Saint Paul's Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday.

Attorney General Herring will be attending the funeral services for both officers.

Contributions are being accepted through the Virginia State Police Association Emergency Relief Fund for those wanting to support the Cullen and Bates families financially.

The families are requesting media avoid approaching them and respect their privacy during these difficult times.
