EXCLUSIVE: Md. ice cream truck driver shot 9 times during July 4th robbery speaks with FOX 5
LANHAM, Md. - An ice cream truck driver shot nine times during a robbery on the Fourth of July is out of the hospital and speaking publicly for the first time about the brutal attack.
Mohamed Diaby is recovering after taking bullets to his legs and hand as his wife prepares to deliver their first child. Diaby, who is originally from Guinea in West Africa, said he never expected to be a victim.
"I'm not bad man. I'm just hard worker, a good worker," he said.
He recounted the terrifying moments as he was parking his ice cream truck in Edmonston on July 4. He said two men ran toward him with a gun.
"He got the gun on me like, 'Give me the money! Give me the money!' I said, 'Okay, whatever I have here, I'll give it to you. But don't hurt me. I have a family. Don't hurt me, please,'" Diaby said.
He said one of the men hit him over the head with the gun, and even though he had given up the money he made for the day, he was pelted by gunfire while inside his truck.
"Until I fall down," he said. "So I was looking like, 'What's going on? I'm dying,' So I come out of the truck like a snake. I was crying like a baby, and I put up my hand like, 'Help, help!'"
Someone heard his cries and he was rushed to the hospital. He was just released on Wednesday and is able get around using a walker. It is a struggle though as Diaby said the pain is still intense. His legs and hand are bandaged, and he is missing the tips of two fingers.
His baby is the one topic that makes him smile.
"It's a girl," he revealed.
He said he is looking forward to life as a new father, even with this unexpected hurdle.
Diaby thanked everyone who has kept him in their thoughts and donated to a GoFundMe page for his medical expenses.
"I'm just going to say thanks to them and God bless," he said.
Prince George's County police said they still don't know who the suspects are, but that this is still a very active case. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-866-411-TIPS.
