Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy took the witness stand Thursday, testifying in a hearing for a former police lieutenant convicted of sexually assaulting a fellow officer.

PGPD sex assault case

The backstory:

Richard Tallant, a former lieutenant with the Prince George’s County Police Department, was found guilty in 2020 of sexually assaulting an off-duty female officer at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge in 2017.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was released in 2023 on appeal, pending a retrial.

The victim, who was present in court, previously won a federal civil lawsuit against Tallant and the county, alleging she was harassed and forced to leave the department after reporting the assault.

Defense attorneys argued that prosecutors engaged in misconduct by withholding evidence, leading to Tallant’s conviction.

Braveboy was subpoenaed to testify. On Thursday, she was on the stand for less than 45 minutes.

Judge Gladys Weatherspoon (L) and ex-PGPD officer Richard Tallant (R).

At one point, prosecutors sought to have Judge Gladys Weatherspoon recuse herself from the case, claiming bias against Braveboy. The judge denied the request.

Tallant remains free while the court determines his fate.

Judge Weatherspoon set a March 12 hearing to decide whether he will be granted a new trial.
