Edmonston police officer involved in Prince George's County shooting identified

An officer who opened fire on a man outside a liquor store in Prince George's County has been identified by officials.

The Edmonston Police Department identified the officer involved in the shooting as Dedreck Baxter, who left the Cheverly Police Department about five months ago and was hired by Edmonston, according to oficials.

Law enforcement sources have told FOX 5 that new audio from the shooting is raising questions because it revealed Baxter never told the man why he was attempting to stop him.

Baxter was in his marked patrol cruiser Thursday morning when a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said the officer spotted the unidentified man in the road.

After pulling into the liquor store parking lot, located at 4221 Kenilworth Avenue, the officer attempted to get the man's name but he did not have an ID on him.

The officer and the man went into the liquor store where the man purchased some alcohol. Things got physical after the two left the store.

Sources told FOX 5 there was a brief scuffle up against the wall of the liquor store before the unidentified man began throwing beer cans at the officer. The officer pulled his taser and fired it, but missed. The officer then pulled his gun and fired four times, striking the man twice.

Video obtained by FOX 5 by a witness shows the man starting to run at the officer before the officer opens fire. Sources told FOX 5 the officer was wearing a camera on his glasses which captured the entire incident.

The incident actually occurred in Bladensburg and officials declined to state on Thursday why Baxter was attempting to take the man into custody.

The man, who has not been identified by authorities, was rushed to the hospital in critical but stable condition. As of Monday the man was listed in serious condition. Witnesses have told FOX 5 the man is homeless and was known to walk up and down the street. Officials have not confirmed that information provided to FOX 5.

The Prince George's County Police Department was handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting and sources have told FOX 5 the case will likely be handed to a grand jury.
