Double dose of winter weather with snow likely Thursday night, wintry mix expected over weekend
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The D.C. region is in for a rough double dose of winter weather beginning late Thursday night into Friday morning and then again over the weekend.
FOX 5's Mike Thomas says Thursday will stay mostly dry during the daylight hours with light snow beginning after dark in the evening hours closer to 8 p.m. Areas to the north and west of the D.C. metro area will be more likely to see snow while areas to the south and east are expected to get mixed precipitation.
The snowy mix will continue into the early hours Friday morning and then clear out quickly. Thomas say by 5 a.m., the storm should be on its way out of the area leaving behind a possible one to two inches to the north and west and about an inch or less in the D.C. region.
Because of the recent cold temperatures, it's possible that what snow does fall will stick. This could make for a tricky commute early Friday morning around the area. Be prepared for longer than usual drive times and the possibility for delays.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in place Thursday night beginning at 6 p.m. and will remain active until 4 a.m. Friday.
We're keeping a close eye on what could turn out to be a dynamic winter storm system this weekend. Beginning around 5 p.m. Saturday the system will move into the region possibly dropping several inches of snow on the ground before turning into rain for the rest of the night and for most of Sunday. Before moving out of the region, the rain could end as snow before leaving us with brutally cold winds heading into Monday.
Early risers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day will likely experience temperatures in the teens.
