A coordinated effort to reduce violent crime in parts of the District was announced Wednesday as the city's mayor, police chief and other officials kicked off the Safer, Stronger DC Summer Crime Initiative.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the plan will use strategic prevention and coordinated enforcement to target specific areas in D.C. where crime is high.

Some of Bowser's main goals are to remove illegal guns from the streets, utilize the latest crime-fighting technology and partner with the community to reduce violent crime.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said that the community's use of the Private Security Camera Incentive Program that the city offers plays a major part in the police department's ability to apprehend violent offenders.
