Cow runs through Mesquite traffic after crash

A loose cow ran through rush hour traffic Thursday morning after the tractor trailer that was hauling it flipped in Mesquite.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office said the cattle hauler overturned around 6:30 a.m. on the Highway 80 ramp leading onto Interstate 635.

A dip in the ramp caused all of the cows to move to one side at the same time and the double decker trailer flipped.

The driver and passenger were not hurt, but as many 20 cows were killed and more may have to be put down because of injuries.

Livestock officers helped to round up most of the surviving animals and contained them in portable corral on the side of the highway. One got loose and is still on the run.

FOX 4 viewer Glenn Johnson shared video of the cow running through cars and trucks stuck in the backup.

Saw this at Hwy 80 and beltline. Thought I would share.

The highway remains partially shut down as officers work to clear the crash and load the cattle for transport. They will be taken to a sheriff's office facility until the owner is able to pick them up.

The cattle hauler was bringing about 100 animals from Florida to Oklahoma.
