Body found submerged in C & O Canal in Georgetown

WASHINGTON - Police are investigating the discovery of a body that was found submerged in the C & O Canal in Georgetown.

The investigation is being conducted near the 1000 block of 31st Street. At this time, officials can only say that the person was submerged in the canal and was wearing a backpack at the time of the discovery.

Police say they got a call about the body around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Although we do not know who the person is, we do know that the body found was that of a male in his 40's or 50's.

It is unknown how he ended up in the canal.

Several roads have been closed in the area while the investigation continues.
