Best times to travel on Memorial Day holiday weekend

The great escape is getting underway as millions are hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend!

If you are packing up the car and heading out you will have a lot of company.

826,000 people in D.C. metro area will be hitting the road this weekend - a 4 percent increase from last year.

Rush hour Thursday night was predicted to be the worst for getting out of town, and if you don't leave by 10 a.m. Friday, prepare to get stuck in traffic at some point.

Virginia's Department of Transportation says the worst congestion was most likely between noon and 7 p.m. on Friday and Monday. Historically, heavy congestion along southbound Interstate 95 and eastbound Interstate 64 occurs from Saturday morning to Saturday afternoon.
