Arlington ATV suspect held without bond
ARLINGTON, Va. - A suspect was being held without bond for illegally driving an all-terrain vehicle in Arlington County, according to authorities.
The Arlington County Police Department said 24-year-old Stephon Williams was with a large group of dirt bikes and ATVs traveling westbound on Arlington Boulevard at about 7:15 p.m. on April 9.
Detectives said they were able to identify Williams as one of the riders after he dropped his cellphone while fleeing the scene.
Williams was taken into custody and charged with operating an ATV on the highway, reckless driving, felony eluding, and concealing his identity. He was being held without bond. If convicted on all charges, police said Williams could face 11 years in prison.
"We know that these ATV riders are not concerned with jurisdictional boundaries," said Ashley Savage, spokesperson for the Arlington County Police Department. "They ride through Arlington County as well as the District and Maryland jurisdictions."
Police said Williams has an extensive record involving 30 cases dating back to 2012, including a prior incident where he illegally rode an ATV in the District. He has also been charged with robbery, carrying an illegal gun and driving without a license.
Even though Williams was charged last month in D.C. for illegally operating an ATV, penalties in the District don't compare to Virginia -- where illegally riding an ATV can come with felony charges.
If you see someone operating a dirt bike or ATV illegally in Arlington County, you're urged to call the Arlington County Police Department at (703) 558-2222.
