MARTINSBURG, W. Va. - Video and photos shared on social media Thursday night show what appears to be a tornado in the skies near Martinsburg, West Virginia. Severe storms brought multiple watches and warnings to the D.C. region throughout the afternoon and evening hours.
Earlier in the afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning and said a tornado was on the ground near Martinsburg. Around the same time, several FOX 5 DC viewers tweeted photos and video of what appears to be a funnel cloud. Twitter user @RobertEngle9 shared video shot around 4:30 pm, showing ominous dark cloud over a neighborhood, followed by what appears to be a twister whipping quickly through the area.
Twitter user @Guard07Dog shared another photo taken along Interstate 81 south near Exit 16 in Martinsburg, which shows an apparent tornado.
The National Weather Service says they're not able to officially confirm a touchdown just yet, but they'll do a survey of the area Friday to determine if damage to the area was caused by a tornado.
