14-year-old shot, killed in Southwest DC: police
WASHINGTON - A 14-year-old child is dead following a shooting in Southwest D.C. Sunday, police say.
Patrol officers responded to the scene of the shooting in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street, SW, just before 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 after they heard gunshots in the area.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a 14-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds.
D.C. Fire and EMS was called in and took the teen to a local hospital. Despite all lifesaving efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead.
FOX 5 got a chance to speak exclusively with an eyewitness, Eric Henry, who works across the street here.
Here’s what Henry says happened: There were four people robbing others standing outside the 24/7 market. There are indications that the robbery happened and some of the people getting robbed tried to run away.
Henry told FOX 5 that the 14-year-old was one of the people and that he ran across South Capital Street into this AutoZone parking lot. He said the people who committed the original robbery spotted the 14-year-old and eventually tried robbing him again.
The eyewitness says two people fired shots at the 14-year-old, killing him.
Henry said it’s just sad to see something like this happen in the middle of the day here in this neighborhood.
"I’ve been living in this community over 30 years. It has its ups and downs," he told FOX 5. "Right now, it’s going up. It’s getting better. The police are doing a good job. They could do a little bit better but what I want from this community and from the young people is to take care of yourself. Respect each other. Don’t rob, don’t steal. Go to work. Take care of your family and respect your life. Take care of yourself. Love God and take care of each other."
Detectives have not released any information on potential suspects and the investigation is ongoing.
