Virginia Lottery says $1 million winning ticket to expire

A lottery winner is potentially going to throw away $1 million if they don't claim their prize soon.

The Virginia Lottery said a winning ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven located at 4601 West Broad St. in Richmond about six months ago, but the winner hasn't claimed the money.

Ticket No. 111002 was one of three $1 million tickets drawn in Virginia's New Year's Millionaire Raffle.

Lottery officials said the winning ticket will expire at 5 p.m. on Friday. Unclaimed winnings expire 180 days after the drawing.

"It may be in someone's wallet, a glove compartment, tucked away in a drawer, or anywhere. We need to see that ticket by close of business Friday," said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto.

Unclaimed prize money is donated to Virginia's Literary Fund for educational purposes like new technology for schools and teacher retirement funding.
