Takoma Park police officer exchanges gunfire with man after foot chase into DC, officials say

A police foot chase that began in Maryland led to an exchange of gunfire between a Takoma Park officer and a man in Northeast, D.C.

Police say the officer was on duty when the incident began in Takoma Park around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say that the man pulled a gun and fired at the officer as the chase took them into the District to the 200 block of Sheridan Street. Investigators say the officer returned fire and struck the man.

Both the officer and the alleged gunman were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they recovered the man's weapon on the scene.

Officers say they arrested and charged 19-year-old Kenneth Carroll, of Northeast D.C., with assault on a police officer while armed (gun) and carrying a pistol without a license.

The investigation is continuing.
