BETHESDA, Md. - Several residents will be displaced from their apartments Monday night after an SUV crashed into their two-story apartment building in Bethesda.
The crash happened at The Fields of Bethesda apartment complex on Clarendon Road Monday evening.
The vehicle crashed into an occupied apartment where a family of five lives. A woman who lives in that unit said it sounded like an earthquake when the car smashed into her apartment.
Authorities say the driver of the vehicle was trapped and had to be extricated after the crash. The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
"We heard a really loud crash and just my whole kitchen table just moved and I thought it might be an earthquake or something at the beginning, but then it just stopped. It was just momentarily," said Mila Tonova, who lives a few apartments away from where the crash happened. "It stopped, but I was really startled and I was wondering what it is, and I had no idea that a car can hit the wall and we can feel it all the way there."
Police say the incident does not appear to be weather-related. According to investigators, it preliminarily appears that a floor mat got caught over the pedals of the vehicle and the driver couldn't discern between the brake and accelerator, which resulted in the driver to swerve into the building.
Three families totaling seven people will not be able to return to their apartments Monday night, fire officials say. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
A building inspector was requested to the scene and the building was evacuated.
